What is Minimalism?
Minimalism is a design style that emphasizes simplicity, functionality, and the beauty of natural forms. As interior designer Jane Smith puts it, “Minimalism for me is about keeping a space simple, uncluttered and accentuating the attractive architectural features of a space. The palette is mostly monochromatic and color is used as an accent.”
Minimalism allows the space itself to be the focus, rather than the room’s decorations. This can create a calming effect, allowing people to focus on what’s truly important, such as the people in the room or the view from the window.
In minimalist architecture, the goal is to condense content and streamline form and structure. Lilian H. Weinreich of Lilian H. Weinreich Architects explains that “Minimalist architecture involves the use of reductive design elements, without ornamentation or decoration. Proponents of minimalism believe that condensing the content and form of a design to its bare essentials reveals the true ‘essence of architecture.’”
